Custom Miniatures from Photos: AI vs Traditional Services
Create custom figurines from photos for $1-2 with AI instead of $100-700 with traditional services. Perfect for pet figurines, cake toppers, and gifts.
Picture this: your golden retriever, captured mid-head-tilt with that goofy expression he only makes when you're holding cheese, turned into a 3-inch resin figurine sitting on your desk. Or a wedding cake topper that actually looks like you and your partner instead of two plastic strangers. These are the kinds of things that make people stop and say "wait, how did you get that made?"
The answer used to be: expensively. Custom figurines from photos meant paying a sculptor hundreds of dollars or visiting a 3D scanning studio. Now, AI can turn a single phone photo into a full 3D model in under two minutes. We built Model Spawner to make that process dead simple, and we've watched people create some incredible things with it.
Pet Figurines: The One Everyone Starts With
Pet figurines are by far the most popular thing people make on our platform. It makes sense. You already have a hundred photos of your dog on your phone. Pick one where you can see their whole body (sitting, standing, mid-loaf for cats), upload it, and you'll have a 3D model in about 90 seconds.
The AI is surprisingly good at fur texture, floppy ears, curled tails, all the little details that make your pet look like your pet. Resin printing at small scales picks up that texture nicely. We see a lot of people ordering these as gifts for fellow pet owners, and they're also popular as memorial pieces for a pet who has passed. Because the AI works from a single photo, you can use any picture you already have.
Photo tip: A clear, well-lit shot showing your pet's full body on a simple background works best. A 3/4 angle (slightly off to the side rather than straight on) gives the AI more depth information to work with. If the first result doesn't nail the look, try a different photo or a different AI model. Each generation costs $1-$2, so experimenting is cheap.
Wedding Cake Toppers That Actually Look Like You
Generic cake toppers are fine. Custom ones that look like the actual couple are a showstopper. Take an engagement photo where you're both standing together, upload it, and generate figurines of the two of you. Print them in resin, leave them in elegant white or paint them by hand. At $1-$2 per generation you can experiment with different poses and photos until it's perfect.
Compare that to a traditional custom cake topper service at $200-$400, where you send in photos, wait 3-4 weeks, and hope for the best with no revision options. With AI generation, you see the 3D model in minutes and can rotate it on screen before committing to a print.
Photo tip: Full-body shots with both people clearly visible work best. If one person is partially behind the other, the AI will have to guess at the hidden parts. Shooting against a plain wall or outdoors with an uncluttered background helps the AI isolate the subjects.
"Mini Me" Desk Figurines and Gifts
A 3-4 inch figurine of yourself, a friend, or a coworker is one of those gifts that always lands. Office Secret Santa, retirements, birthdays, going-away presents. It's personal, it's funny, and it's the kind of thing nobody expects. The low cost per generation means you can make one for the whole team without the budget getting out of hand.
Photo tip: Head-to-toe shots with good lighting on the face. Soft, even lighting (near a window or outdoors on an overcast day) preserves detail. Harsh shadows confuse the AI and you'll lose facial features.
Memorial Figurines
Creating a small figurine of someone who has passed, whether a person or a pet, is one of the more meaningful things people use this for. Traditional services would require a scanning appointment that's obviously no longer possible. AI generation only needs a single photo, so any cherished picture you already have is enough.
We've seen people create figurines from old family photos, childhood pictures of grandparents, and favorite snapshots of pets. The results aren't perfect from every angle (the AI infers the back and sides from one image), but for a figurine displayed on a shelf facing forward, it's more than enough.
What This Actually Costs
The cost difference between traditional methods and AI generation is dramatic. Here's how it breaks down:
| Method | Cost | Turnaround | Iterations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D scanning studio | $150–$500 | 1–2 weeks | Usually 1 attempt |
| Custom sculptor | $200–$700 | 2–6 weeks | Limited revisions |
| Mail-order figurine service | $100–$300 | 2–4 weeks | No iteration |
| AI generation (Model Spawner) | $1–$2 | 1–2 minutes | Unlimited |
That $1-$2 is for the AI generation only. If you have your own resin printer, the material cost for a small figurine is pennies. If you don't have a printer, you can order a print directly through Model Spawner and we'll ship it to you.
How to Get the Best Print
Once you've generated a 3D model you like, printing is where it becomes real. A few things to keep in mind:
- Use resin, not filament. For figurines under 6 inches, resin (SLA/MSLA) printers capture far more detail than FDM. Facial features, fur texture, clothing folds, all of it comes through in resin. FDM at this scale produces visible layer lines and loses fine detail.
- Size matters. 3-4 inches is the sweet spot for desk figurines. 5-6 inches for display pieces. 1-1.5 inches if you're going for tabletop gaming scale. Set the height in your slicer before printing.
- Add a flat base. AI-generated models often have uneven bottoms. Adding a circular or square base in your slicer (or in Blender) gives the figurine stable footing so it doesn't wobble or tip over.
- Painting transforms the result. Unpainted resin prints look decent on their own, but a coat of primer followed by acrylic paints takes them to another level. If you've never painted a miniature before, YouTube has thousands of beginner tutorials that walk through the basics.
- Try multiple AI models. Different models have different strengths. TRELLIS.2 and Hyper3D Rodin are excellent for figurines with fine geometric detail. Hunyuan3D is a solid budget option. Generate a few variations and pick the best one.
- No printer at home? Model Spawner lets you order a print directly from the platform. Choose your material, confirm the size, and it ships to your door.
